How use it

This portal is the main interface for exploring taxa, accepted names, synonymy, and distribution data for Cerambycidae of the Palaearctic Region within the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera framework. It combines text search with geographic filtering in one page.

Main idea: use the left column for query text and display options, and the right column for geographic filters (Regions and Country codes). The system can resolve taxonomic names (family/subfamily/tribe/genus/subgenus) or run direct species/subspecies text matching.

What This Page Does

The home page returns either a list of matching records or a structured taxon report. If the query matches a higher-rank taxon such as a family, subfamily, tribe, genus, or subgenus, the result is shown as a taxonomic block. If the query behaves like a direct name search, the result is shown as a list of matched species or subspecies.

For genus-level results you can also jump to a more focused report using the small genus ... link shown next to a matching line.

How To Search

Layout And Filters

Search Options

Genus Origin Logic

The genus origin field preserves information about the original combination. This is taxonomically important because a taxon originally described in a different genus should display the author in parentheses when the original genus is hidden from the visible line.

Example:

millefolii Adams, 1817: 311 (Saperda) E: BU GR ST ?TR UK A: AB AR GG IN TR

With Show genus origin disabled, the shortened visible form becomes:

millefolii (Adams, 1817) E: BU GR ST ?TR UK A: AB AR GG IN TR

The page marker after the colon and the original genus are removed from the visible line, but the parentheses rule is preserved.

Remarks And Navigation

Remarks are opened by clicking a #number marker next to a taxon line. Each remark can also be opened directly by URL with the remark=NUMBER parameter, so a specific remark view can be bookmarked or shared.

The remark window now supports two navigation scopes:

This means the default contextual mode is useful for thematic browsing of the current taxon or result block, while global mode is useful for direct sequential review of all remarks.

Keyboard support is available while the remark window is open: Left Arrow = previous remark, Right Arrow = next remark, Escape = close.

Geographic Filtering

Use region and country selectors in the right column. You can choose one or multiple regions and then select country codes from the filtered list. This avoids guessing code spelling and keeps filtering consistent.

How Results Behave

Reports

A report is the structured view used when the query resolves to a taxonomic unit such as a family, subfamily, tribe, genus, or subgenus. Instead of showing a flat list of matches, the page builds a taxonomic block in hierarchical order.

Reports are especially useful for browsing a higher-rank group in taxonomic order. A general search result answers the question "what matched?", while a report answers the question "what belongs here, and how is it arranged?".

When you use Generate HTML, the current report view is exported in its visible form. That means the exported file respects the active display switches, including synonymy, metadata, and genus-origin presentation.
