Aphodius proximus a affinis
http://www.museum.nantes.fr/pages/03-ap ... 0Loire.pdf
PS. Na Wilczą mam nie po drodze

Re: Aphodius proximus a affinis
A. affinis was described from Austria by Panzer (1823) but I think the type specimens were destroyed. Later, all the specimens from western EU (France, Spain and Portugal) approximately corresponding with the description of A. affinis were identified as A. affinis. However, nobody has made comparison with Panzer's type specimens. If someone has made it, he would find that the western populations are different, until now undescribed species. Ádám (1994) discovered it at first time. When Tesař (1945) described A. hoberlandti based on single male from Катав-Ивановск collected by Dr. Jureček in 1917, he had only specimens from France (Fontainebleau) for comparison. If he had had Panzer's type specimens of A. affinis, he would see that his male from Катав-Ивановск is the same species as Panzer's type material. This problems described Ádám (1994): A check-list of the Hungarian Scarabaeoidea with the description of ten new taxa (Coleoptera). Fol. Entomol. Hung., 55: 5-17. So, A. hoberlandti is the synonym for A. affinis, and for western populations Ádám created a new name A. proximus.
A. proximus has different bionomics than A. affinis. A. proximus is typical coprophagous species with locally mass occurrence in France and Iberian peninsula. A. affinis has only 2 localities known to me with its recent occurrence: one in southern Moravia (Czech Rep.), and Гайдари (Зміївський район, Харківська область, Ukraine).
All the specimens from western EU (France, Iberian Peninsula) are locally common species A. proximus.
A affinis is something different than related species from the sbgn. Nimbus. It's very interesting and extremely rare beetle. I think the development of this species take place no in excrements of big mammals. In my opinion, its occurrence in excrements of big mammals is facultative. In southern Moravia (Czech Rep.) is a lot of horse pastures, but only in 1995, 1998 and 1999 A. affinis was relatively common on a few of them. It was always after overpopulation of small rodents (Muridae). My colleagues found it also in burrows of Oryctolaus cuniculus and in its droppings. In the last ca. 10 years, on all Moravian pastures was very common A. (Nimbus) obliteratus, which was previously very rare there. Now, A. affinis completely became extinct at these localities. Last year was only one very last locality in Moravia with A. affinis and A. obliteratus 1:1 (horse pasture), but this year only with A. obliteratus. We don't know why this species became extinct while other coprophagous Aphodius-species not or quite the contrary they are increasing.
The occurrence of A. affinis was confirmed only in the following countries:
- Austria: Zurndorf env., Neusiedl am See env., Stein an der Donau, Krems an der Donau, Wien - Prater (Petrovitz 1956, 1969, Horion 1958, Chromý & Král 1988) - ca. 50 spec.;
- Czech Republic: Prostějov, Lechovice, Miroslav env., Prosiměřice, Novosedly, Pavlovské vrchy - Soutěska, Mikulov env. - Na Mušlově, Bulhary - obora, Milovice, Pouzdřany env., Lednice env., Valtice, Ladná, Břeclav - Pohansko, Čejč, Zaječí, Bílé Karpaty - Velká Javořina hill (Chromý 1985, Král & Souček 1987, Chromý & Král 1988, Král & Vitner 1993,1996, Vitner & Král 1993, Chybík 1997,1998, Juřena et al. 2000,2008) - ca. 850 spec.;
- Slovakia: Bratislava (Král 2008) - 1 spec. (Strupi lgt., probably 19th century);
- Hungary: ?? (Ádám 1994) - 1 or 2 old spec.
- Ukraine: Гайдари (Král 2008) - ca. 30 spec. (O. A. Novikov lgt., recent records);
- Russia: Катав-Ивановск (Tesař 1945) - 2 spec. (Dr. Jureček lgt., 1917).
Good differential diagnosis between both species (A. affinis and A. proximus) you can find in Dellacasa G. & Dellacasa M. (2006): Coleoptera Aphodiidae, Aphodiinae. Fauna d’Italia. Vol. 41. Calderini, Bologna, 484 pp:
A. affinis: (my note: coloration of elytra is darker, reddish, black spots are in most cases larger and denser):
lateral margins of pronotum densely elongately ciliate; pronotum and elytra smooth thus almost shiny; epistoma coarsely densely punctured on disc, confusedly subrugosely punctured distally; frontal suture finely impressed; hind tibiae superior apical spur distinctly shorter than first tarsal segment. Length (to me) 5-7 mm.
A. proximus: (my note: coloration of elytra is more light, yellow-brownish, black spots are small and sparse):
lateral margins of pronotum sparsely and almost shortly ciliate; pronotum and elytra finely microreticulate thus few shiny; epistoma finely sparsely punctured on disc, distinctly coarsely punctured distally; frontal suture obsolete; hind tibiae superior apical spur near as long as first tarsal segment. Length 5-6 mm.
